Head of JIT probing Zainab’s rape, murder changed

Zainab case

LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has changed the head of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to probe the rape and murder of seven-year old Zainab.
To investigate the incident, Shahbaz Sharif formed a JIT headed by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Abubakkar Khudaa Bux; however, the slain girl’s father Muhammad Amin expressed dissatisfaction with the nomination of Bux.
Muhammad Amin also requested the Chief Minister to replace him.
Paying heed to the request of Amin, the Punjab Government replaced Bux with Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police named as Muhammad Idrees.
The government also issued a notice to this effect.
Four senior officers, including Sheikhupura Regional Police Officer Zulfiqar Hameed, were appointed as the JIT’s members.
On Thursday, the team’s scope was expanded as three more senior police officers were included in it.
Zainab went missing in the Road Kot area last Thursday (Jan 4) and later her dead body was found in a garbage heap.
The minor girl was raped several times before she was strangled to death.
