Government to follow ‘trade not aid’ policy: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that the achievement of $25 billion export target by the government during FY-2011-12 is a great success in view of the global economic crunch when exports are registering a decreasing trend worldwide. This speaks volumes about the potency of ‘trade not aid’ policy of the present government, he said.

The Prime Minister expressed these views while talking to Amin Faheem, senior Minister for Commerce, who called on him at the PM House today.

The Prime Minister urged the Ministry of Commerce to keep up this export momentum, adding that enhanced market access to the Pakistani products by the European Union from 2014 onwards would be instrumental into surge of the exports.

The Prime Minister said that this success was the outcome of emphasis the government had been placing on promoting trade relations with the neighbouring countries and beyond.

The Prime Minister said that Currency Swap Agreements that Pakistan had signed with China and Turkey would surely give requisite impetus to the increasing of export volume to these countries.

The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of Ministry of Commerce under the leadership of Minister Amin Faheem in achieving the ambitious export target.

The Minister for Commerce told the Prime Minister that his Ministry was committed to explore all avenues aimed at increasing trade by working on diversification of export items. -- PR
