Attorney General Sheikh Ashtar Ausaf tenders resignation

ISLAMABAD: Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Sheikh Ashtar Ausaf Ali on Wednesday tendered his resignation to President Mamnoon Hussain.
According to reports Ashtar Ausaf had tendered his resignation on May 31 but was asked to continue. Interestingly, Ausaf is in London currently while his office will forward the resignation to the president. Media reports stated that Ausaf in his resignation stated, “I believe that in the wake of imminent general elections, it would only be correct for me to tender my resignation from Constitutional office, lest it be perceived by any party that my continued presence will impede the process of free and fair elections. The democratic transition, and its preservation, is a cornerstone of our Constitution and our democracy.”
He has requested the President to graciously accept his resignation with immediate effect. The news comes hours after former advocate general Punjab Asma Hamid was removed from public office by Punjab’s interim government.
The caretaker government of Punjab de-notified Hamid as the advocate general of the province on Wednesday. According to a letter sent to the authorities concerned, Punjab Governor Mohammad Rafique Rajwana directed that Asma “shall cease to hold that office with immediate effect.”

She was appointed as an assistant advocate general in January 2014 and as additional advocate general in March 2015. She assumed responsibilities as acting advocate general on two previous occasions.
The interim government also de-notified ten assistant advocate generals in view of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notification dated April 11. The names include Barrister Asjad Saeed, Amar Sanaullah, Mohammad Tariq Mehmood Butt, Ahmad Hassan Rana, Mohammad Tariq Nadeem, Barrister Bushra Saqib, Asif Afzal Bhatti, Chaudhry Mohammad Jawed Yaqub, Khalid Masood Ghani Barrister Ameer Abbas Ali Khan.
