Ayyan Ali declared proclaimed offender in currency smuggling case

RAWALPINDI: A Customs court has declared model Ayyan Ali a proclaimed offender in a currency smuggling case.
During a hearing on Saturday, the court ordered Ali’s lawyers Shaukat Abbas and Muhammad Nawaz as well as the prosecutor handling her case to present the details of the case. The judge expressed displeasure over Ali’s constant absences.
Despite multiple letter being written to her and two months’ time granted, she still hasn’t appeared before the court, said the judge.
The court issued a ‘permanent’ arrest warrant for Ali and summoned all the witnesses at the next hearing. A permanent arrest warrant means that whenever she arrives in Pakistan, she will be arrested.
It also ordered the relevant departments to halt the sale of her apartment in Karachi. The case was adjourned till March 16.
During the last hearing on February 15, the prosecutor requested the court to have her declared a proclaimed offender. Her lawyers had argued that she is ill, which is why she cannot be present in court.
However, the judge observed that she is too ill to come to court but not too ill to travel to Dubai.
Ali was arrested on March 14, 2015 at the Islamabad airport while attempting to board a Dubai-bound flight while illegally carrying $500,000.
