LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife, Begum Kulsoom, will be laid to rest today (Friday). The body of the former first lady, was moved to Sharif Medical City in Jati Umra almost half an hour after a flight carrying it from London landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport on Friday morning.
The body was transferred to an ambulance directly from the airplane and taken to Sharif Medical City. Nawaz, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar, who have been released on parole, were also taken to the medical facility to pay their last respects.
Hassan and Hussain Nawaz, Begum Kulsoom’s sons, have not returned to the country for their mother’s funeral.
Begum Kulsoom’s funeral prayers will be held at Sharif Medical City Ground in Lahore’s Jati Umra neighbourhood at 5pm. Maulana Tariq Jameel will lead Begum Kulsoom’s funeral prayers.
The former first family will be laid to rest in Jati Umra near to where Nawaz’s father, Mian Sharif, is buried.
Security has been tightened in the area and on routes leading to Jati Umra ahead of the funeral.
