Caretaker finance minister rules out more subsidies

ISLAMABAD: Caretake Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar has stated that there is no room for further subsidies to the people in IMF agreements signed by the previous governments.

Speaking to the media after a meeting of the Senate’s Committee on Finance, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar emphasized that the current government is acutely aware of the concerns of the country’s impoverished population. She  asserted that the government cannot burden the already vulnerable class with more difficulties.

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar pointed out that subsidies within IMF agreements were decided by previous governments, and the provision of subsidies is already stipulated in these agreements. Therefore, there is no possibility of providing additional subsidies according to these agreements.

The Finance Minister stated that the current government was devising strategies to strengthen the economy and was working on practical measures to enhance economic conditions. She  noted that they will take measures for economic stability that will help stabilize the value of the rupee against the dollar.

“We are going to take steps for economic stability that will make the exchange rate of the rupee stable against the dollar.”
