ECC defers electricity price increase till next meeting

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) Tuesday deferred the expected increase in the price of electricity till its next meeting.
The ECC meeting was chaired by Federal Finance Minister Asad Umar, which was expected to approve a Rs2 per unit increase in electricity prices. According to reports, the ECC had sought Prime Minister’s approval for increase in the price ahead of the meeting. However, the ECC deferred the decision and directed the NEPRA and Power Division to present a policy for the collection of bills and presents a strategy to decrease line losses.
According to reports, the meeting decided that circular debt would not be recovered from consumers.
The ECC last meeting on September 17 had increased gas prices by up to 143 per cent.
