ISLAMABAD: Upon the recommendation of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel has been elevated as a Supreme Court judge whereas Justice Yahya Afridi has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of PHC.
Earlier on Tuesday, JCP met at the Supreme Court with Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali in the chair. Four senior judges of the apex court, the law minister, Attorney General for Pakistan and a representative of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) attended the meeting.
The meeting recommended the elevation of Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel to the Supreme Court. A seat in the apex court became vacant after the resignation of Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, who tendered his resignation after the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding illegal appointments in the Islamabad High Court.
Meanwhile, it was also learnt that the Judicial Commission also proposed the appointment of senior judge of Peshawar High Court Justice Yahya Afridi as the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court.
