Law ministry approves extension in accountability court’s judge tenure

Hearing of al-Azizia reference against Sharif family adjourned

ISLAMABAD: Ministry of Law approved a summary of Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking extension in the tenure of accountability court’s judge Muhammad Bashir who is hearing corruption references against Sharif family and former finance minister Ishaq Dar.
The ministry after approving the IHC’s summary, dispatched its own summary to Prime Minister Secretariat for final approval.
Earlier, the Supreme Court took notice of government’s failure to extend the tenure of Judge Muhammad Bashir and summoned secretary law for explanation.
The court asked the secretary as to why the government had not given extension to the accountability court despite the IHC’s summary seeking extension in the tenure of Judge Muhammad Bashir.
Judge Muhammad Bashir was was appointed in 2012 while the federal government, on the suggestion of IHC, extended his tenure for three years in 2015.
Now, the judge is going to retire on March 13 this year.
