ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday accepted nomination papers of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, the wife of former minister Nawaz Sharif, for NA-120 by-election – a seat that fell vacant after the ex-PM’s disqualification by the Supreme Court over ‘dishonesty’ and ‘corruption’.
Rejecting all the objections raised by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the returning officer accepted Kulsoom’s nomination papers despite her disappearance for the scrutiny of her nomination papers.
The former first lady and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate left for London earlier in the day. She will return to Pakistan on September 23, image of her ticket shows.
Earlier, ECP approved nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Dr Yasmin Rashid for upcoming by-election in Lahore’s NA-120 Constituency.
Talking to media outside the ECP in Lahore, Dr Yasmin Rashid expressed hope that she would win the NA-120 by-polls to be held on September 17.
Yasmin Rashid also said that they raised 25 objections over nomination papers submitted with the ECP by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Kalsoom Nawaz. She said that Kalsoom Nawaz didn’t fill all forms related to her nomination.
The PTI’s Candidate said that Kalsoom Nawaz has been the Deputy Chairman of ZE Company but she didn’t show the earnings received from the Company. She said that Kalsoom Nawaz cannot contest the election on PML-N ticket as following the disqualification of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the registration of the ruling party has terminated.
Furthermore, Dr Yasmin Rashid said that Kalsoom Nawaz has attached her Iqama in the nomination papers.
On the other hand, there is a chance of biometric voting in the constituency as NADRA has sent required material including PP-4, Gujar Khan, to the ECP.
The seat fell vacant after Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif under Artilce 62 (f) of the Constitution on July 28 in Panama Leaks case.
The polling in the constituency will be held on September 17.
