ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that Pakistan reserves the right to defend itself against any threat from Afghanistan and would take necessary measures to protect its citizens and territory whenever required.
In an interview with VOA, , the caretaker prime minister asserted that Pakistan is actively contributing to the pursuit of lasting peace in Afghanistan and the broader region. He mentioned that they are addressing challenges related to Afghan transit, including curbing illegal trade. Trade relations, he noted, are improving not only with Afghanistan but also with all the Central Asian Republics, as these nations recognize the importance of regional trade connectivity.
When questioned about potential terrorist threats originating from Afghan territory, he clarified that Pakistan reserves the right to defend itself against any such activities and would take necessary measures to protect its citizens and territory whenever required.
He underscored Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to continue addressing the Jammu and Kashmir dispute on both global and regional platforms. He emphasized that this conflict has long been on the agenda of the UN Security Council, highlighting its historical significance.
The Prime Minister drew attention to the severe human rights violations occurring in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that the region has effectively become the world’s largest prison, where the voices of Kashmiris are suppressed. Pakistan, he stated, has consistently and persistently championed the Kashmir issue in various international and regional forums.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Pakistan’s strong relationships with Arab, Gulf, and other regional countries and expressed optimism that its ties with Western nations would further strengthen in the coming years.
Regarding the scheduling of general elections, the caretaker Prime Minister emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to announce the election date. He reiterated the interim government’s readiness to support the ECP by providing financial resources and ensuring security for the electoral process.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in overcoming security challenges at the country’s borders and successfully completing the electoral process. He pledged to take measures to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted election process and emphasized the commitment to upholding democratic processes in Pakistan.
Addressing another question, the Prime Minister affirmed that freedom of expression prevails in the country, with Pakistan’s indicators in this regard outperforming those of many regional counterparts.
