PPP likely to announce candidate for chairman, deputy chairman Senate tonight

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has wrapped up its consultative meetings for finalizing candidates for election on Senate chairman and deputy chairman seats.
Majority of the PPP leadership has decided to field outgoing senate chairman Raza Rabbani for election on the same slot, local media reported.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto is expected to make the final decision after consultations with co-chairman Asif Zardari and announce the name tonight, reports added.
The party is holding a dinner for the party senators tonight at Zardari House in Islamabad where Bilawal is expected to make the announcement.
The development comes days after Zardari refused Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and its allies offer to support Rabbani if he contests. “I do not want that,” Zardari had said during a press conference when asked if he will consider the offer.
Earlier, the PPP and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had given Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Quddus Bizenjo the authority to bring forth a joint candidate for the slots with help of the newly-elected independent senators from Balochistan.
Hasil Bizenjo talking to media after a meeting of PML-N and its allies today said that they have finalised names for the chairman and deputy chairman slots but that they will wait for an announcement from the PPP till tonight.
