PPP rejects, condemns SC decision in Panama papers case

Asif Ali Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Thursday rejected the Supreme Court decision in Panama papers leaks case and demanded of the Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif to resign as he lost moral ground to govern.
Addressing a press conference after Supreme court’s decision in Panama papers case, former president Asif Ali Zardari appreciated two senior judges of the Supreme court for their dissenting notes in the decision, who had disqualified the prime minister. He said that two judges have said that the prime minister is no more ‘Sadiq and Ameen’
He blamed the PTI chief Imran Khan for saving Mian Nawaz Sharif, as the PPP’s Panama Papers Bill was the only way to for investigation into the Panama papers. Had the PPP and other opposition parties taken united stance, the results would have been different today, he said.
Asif Ali Zardari condemned the Supreme Court`s decision on Panama Leaks case.
Zardari said that the “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should resign ethically. I condemn the Supreme Court`s decision and reject it,” further adding, “today democracy and justice were adversely affected.”
He said that the majority of junior judges have joked with the people of Pakistan, however, the senior judges have given the finest decision. “I salute the two senior judges,” he said.
“Mian sahab you have failed. You cannot run the government. Give someone else a chance to run the government,” he said.
“A decision which the Supreme Court could not make, how will the Grade-19 officers under the PM decide the case?” he asked.
“They have no concerns except their own enjoyment,” the PPP co-chairman said of the PML-N.
“Why are they distributing sweets? Because two senior judges said you [PM Nawaz Sharif] should be disqualified? Is this why you are eating mithai?” he asked.
“You have deceived the nation,” Zardari said.
“Imran Khan, we told you to join us and form legislation and then take it to the court,” he said. “But he [Khan] does not listen. He has never been to jail, he does not know how judges work, how justice works.”
“We believe that if Pakistan is not safe in the hands of Nawaz Sharif, it is also not safe in the hands of Imran Khan,” the former president said.
“I am disappointed by Imran Khan leaving us and going to the SC alone. If Aitzaz Ahsan stood there and argued against them [the Sharif family], then the decision might have been different.”
“We will see what other political forces decide, and the people’s decision will also guide us,” he added.
“I think it is evident now to the nation that Nawaz’s real face is not sharif,” Zardari said.
PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan termed the dissenting notes “heavier than the decision of the other three judges.”
“The two judges have declared the PM is disqualified. The decision of these two judges is the Supreme Court’s decision,” Ahsan said.He said that he would enter this parliament through by-polls.
Senior party leaders including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Aitzaz Ahsan, Qamar Zaman Kaira and others were also present on this occasion.
“There will be no use of forming the JIT while PM Sharif remains in power,” Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said .
Ahsan, however, noted that two senior judges of the apex court had disqualified Prime Minister Sharif from his office.
He said that three other judges also did not give PM Sharif a clean chit.
“I would say that the Supreme Court has invoked the doctrine of necessity. All I can say is all those who had taken part in the historic lawyers’ movement for the independence of judiciary would be left disappointed by the verdict,” he said.
