PTI emerges as largest party in Punjab again

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has emerged as largest party in Punjab again after achieving a landslide victory in the make or break by-elections, putting on a strong show in Lahore, which was otherwise known as a rival PML-N stronghold.

The by-elections were held on Sunday in 14 districts of Punjab on 20 provincial assembly seats and PTI emerged victorious in 15 constituencies that included both rural and urban constituencies. The PML won only four seats while one independent candidate won in a constituency.

According to initial results, PTI candidates secured victory in Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Jhang, Lahore, and Khushab provincial assembly seats while the party took the lead by a clear majority in 15 constituencies of the province.

After landslide victory, PTI emerged as largest party and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi now has clear chances of becoming the Chief Minister of Punjab as the PML-Q and PTI’s total number of seats has increased to 188 and the PML-N and its allies have 77 seats in the Punjab Assembly.

Currently, the PTI has 178 members and PML-Q has 10 seats. PTI’s candidate for chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi would thus get 188 votes while the PML-N had 164 members, two of whom have resigned. The Speaker has accepted his resignation, but the Election Commission has not yet de-notified him.

If the resignations are accepted before July 22, then the number of PML-N members will become 162 and after adding the four new seats won in the by-elections, its total will go to 166. The PPP has 7 and Rah-e-Haq has one. By adding the four new independent MPAs, the total number becomes 178.

This means that there is no ostensible obstacle to Chaudhry Pervez Elahi becoming CM of Punjab but there is also the possibility that 4 independent members who supported Hamza Shahbaz as Chief Minister will vote for Chaudhry Pervez.

Chaudhry Pervez Elahi could become CM with 194 votes

PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz, who spearheaded her party’s by-election campaign, said the ruling party should accept the election results with an open heart.

The results of the by-polls have shaken the PML-N and its supremo Nawaz Sharif  has called an emergency party meeting from London to devise a future strategy in the wake of the results. Maryam Nawaz, who spearheaded her party’ election campaign, said that her party should openly accept the results. One should bow before the decision of the people. In politics, there are always wins and losses. The heart should be enlarged. Wherever there are weaknesses, efforts should be made to identify them and overcome them. God willing, it will be fine,” she tweeted.

Similarly, Chairman PTI Imran Khan has also convened the core committee meeting of his party tomorrow at Banigala to discuss the strategy keeping in view the results of the Punjab by-polls.
