SC limits role of patwarkhanas in urban areas to records keeping

Govt to file review petition against SC's judgement in COAS Bajwa’s extension case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) Thursday restricted the role of ‘patwarkhanas’ in urban and settled areas to keeping property records.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing a suo motu case pertaining to the functioning of patwaris, kanungos and tehsildars.
The apex court bench ruled that patwaris would have no role in property deals in areas where the Punjab Land Revenue Act (LRA) is followed.
Furthermore, the court said that from here on verbal agreements in urban areas will not be recognised by law any more.
