KARACHI: Several people sustained injuries when clashes erupted between workers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) at the Hakeem Saeed Ground in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area.
According to reports, workers of both the parties developed differences over Hakeem Saeed Ground – the venue for May 12 public meetings announced by both PPP and PTI – and resultantly resorted to clashes.
The Ground turned into a battle field as PPP and PTI workers pelted stones at each other and also resorted to attack with sticks and iron rods.
Angry PPP activists also set ablaze PTI camp at the venue.
Several vehicles and motorcycles were also damaged in the clashes with media reports saying that two vehicles and dozens of motorcycles were also torched.
The clashes left scores of people also injured. Reports of aerial firing in the clashes were also received.
All the business centers in the area were also shut down as situation remained tense for several hours after the clash.
It is pertinent to mention here that police remained a silent spectator on the occasion.
A heavy contingent of Rangers reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
On the other hand, PTI leader Ali Zaidi reached Aziz Bhatti Police Station to register a case against PPP leaders and workers.
He also asked Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak not to allow PPP to hold public meetings in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sinsh Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident after which the PPP camp at the Hakeem Saeed Ground was removed.
