Asma Rani, medical student murdered in Kohat over refusal to marriage proposal

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will hear the suo-motu case of Asma Rani murder today (Wednesday).
On Tuesday, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took suo motu notice of the murder of a medical student in Kohat.
The chief justice had summoned a report from the Inspector General Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Salahuddin Mehsud, the deadline for which expires today.
Chief Justice Nisar remarked while hearing a separate case on Tuesday that the suspect is said to be a relative of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader.
The chief justice questioned how the suspect was able to flee the country.
Earlier, Safia Rani, the sister of murdered Asma Rani said that her family had approached the police and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Kohat district President Aftab Alam and sought help but they did nothing to save her sister.
Safia Rani said that her family had told police and the PTI leader about the life threats to her sister issued by influential Mujahid Afridi.
She said that Mujahid Afridi had been harassing and threatening her sister but no one came to help their family despite, Asma along with her family approached to PTI leader Aftab Alam thrice and begged for help.
Safia said, “Mujahid Afridi came to our house and issued threats to me, my family and my sister. We informed the police about these threats but no action was taken because he belongs to a rich family and we are a poor family. I have heard that policemen have been talking how rich Mujahid Afridi is.”
She said PTI brought no change in KP and police took action only against the poor who have no clout and resources.Safia said that the KP police could have arrested Mujahid Afridi. “The police had 6 hours to act before Afridi took flight to Saudi and name of the killer was known but no action was taken.”
“My sister told me that Mujahid Afridi harassed her, chased and terrorised. I got number of Mujahid’s family and from London I called them and requested them to stop harassing my sister. Instead, they threatened that they will harm me in London. He told me not to interfere,” Sofia added.
Safia said that Asma told Aftab Alam that his nephew will kill her but he didn’t move. “My sister told how she was going to Abbotabad one day when Mujahid Afridi made attempt on her on the way and snatched her purse. We told Aftab Alalm but we didn’t get any positive response.
Safia Rania appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Army Chief General Qamar Bajwa and Imran Khan to play their role in getting her family protection. She said Mujahid Afridi must be brought back from Saudi Arabia and her family in Kohat must be provided protection because Mujahid Afrdi’s family is influential and powerful.
Mujahid Afridi’s brother Sadiq Ullah has been arrested by the police and Afridi is believed to have travelled straight to Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad after committing the crime, boarding a flight to Saudi Arabia that evening. A red warrant has been issued by Interpol for his arrest by Pakistani police.
Asma Rani, a third-year medical student was killed in her hometown of Kohat after she refused a marriage proposal. The victim’s family claims she was shot dead by the prime suspect Mujahid Afridi who fled the country to Saudi Arabia.
