On Monday, Pakistan solemnly observed the 13th anniversary of the Gayari sector tragedy, paying heartfelt tribute to the 129 brave soldiers who lost their lives in one of the most devastating avalanches in the country’s military history.
The avalanche hit on April 7, 2012. A massive wall of snow struck the Pakistan Army’s battalion headquarters in the Gayari sector near Siachen Glacier. The entire camp was buried deep under layers of snow and ice. Despite harsh weather and rugged terrain, the Pakistan Army launched an intense rescue and recovery mission that lasted for several months.
Foreign experts had declared the site nearly impossible to access. But the Corps of Engineers of the Pakistan Army pressed on with courage and professionalism. Their determination turned an impossible task into a national effort of hope, resolve, and honour. The bravery shown in the aftermath of the Gayari sector tragedy still echoes throughout the ranks of the armed forces and across the country.
The Siachen region is often called the highest battlefield in the world. It tests soldiers not just with enemy threats but with extreme cold, fierce winds, and unpredictable avalanches. In such an unforgiving environment, the Gayari sector tragedy stands as a stark reminder of the price paid to protect the nation.
To honour the fallen heroes, a Martyrs’ Memorial has been built at Gayari. It serves as a lasting tribute to the soldiers who embraced martyrdom in the line of duty. Across Pakistan, ceremonies were held in cantonments and military bases. Senior officers and families of the martyrs offered prayers and laid floral wreaths in remembrance.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued messages to mark the day. Both leaders paid rich tribute to the martyrs and expressed deep respect for their sacrifice.
“These brave souls are a shining symbol of patriotism and devotion,” said the prime minister. He added that the nation will never forget their sacrifice and stands firmly with the families of the fallen heroes.
The Gayari sector tragedy remains a powerful symbol of the dangers faced by troops stationed in high-altitude zones. It also reflects the resilience and unwavering spirit of the Pakistan Army as it continues to guard the country’s borders against every threat—both natural and human.
