16 killed, over 40 injured Lahore suicide blast

LAHORE: At least 16 people were killed and more than 4o injured in a suicide explosion during a protest demonstration of chemists near Punjab Assembly on Mall Road on Monday.
Chemists were protesting against Punjab Drug Act on Chairing Cross, when the blast occurred.
According to reports, the blast was occurred near a stage set up by protesters, where a large number of policemen and media men were also present.
According to CCPO Lahore, DIG traffic Capt Mobeen and SSP operation Zahid Gondal were also among the dead. According to report, 16 people were killed in the explosion.
The injured were being shifted to hospital. A large number of policemen and media persons were also present on this occasion.
The blast occurred police and media vehicles, which were also damaged in the explosion.
According to reports, many of the injured were in critical condition.
A spokesman for Punjab government and police also confirmed the killing of 14 people in the explosion. The spokesman said that the explosion was a suicide blast.
Emergency has been declared in all hospitals of the provincial capital, as the injured were shifted to different hospitals of the city.
The Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa has strongly condemned the explosion and directed the corps commanders and other military officials in Lahore to provide complete support to the civil institutions.
President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have condemned the Lahore blast and expresses sorrow over the loss of precious human lives.
In their separate messages, both President and Prime Minister said such dastardly acts cannot shake the resolve of the nation.
Affirming the state’s resolve against the menace of terrorism, they said this scourge will be rooted out.
They expressed resolve to bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.
The Prime Minister directed to provide best medical facilities to the injured and victims of the blast.
Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan has strongly condemned the blast incident in Lahore.
In a statement today, he expressed deep grief over the loss of precious lives in the incident.
Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani condemned the blast outside the Punjab Assembly in Lahore this evening and said that such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot deter nation’s resolve to eliminate the scourge of terrorism from the country.
