Islamabad:
The National Assembly has approved the payment of restored MNAs’ salaries for 19 lawmakers on reserved seats following a Supreme Court. This decision will allow the disbursement of more than a year’s outstanding salaries and allowances to the reinstated members, marking a significant move in Pakistan’s parliamentary financial management.
The decision paves the way for the payment of more than a year’s outstanding salaries to the reinstated lawmakers. The Ministry of Law has given a formal go-ahead to the National Assembly Secretariat, stating that the first notification issued after the Supreme Court verdict will be considered applicable for salary purposes.
Following the clearance, the National Assembly Secretariat has begun working on the payment mechanism for the restored MNAs.
According to official estimates, more than Rs110 million will be disbursed among the 19 MNAs, with each lawmaker expected to receive approximately Rs6 million in backdated salaries and allowances.
The Secretariat had earlier sought formal guidance from the Ministry of Law and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the matter. The ECP, however, left the decision to the discretion of the National Assembly Secretariat.
Sources within the National Assembly said that payments are expected to be released in January, subject to final approval by the Speaker of the National Assembly.
It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court had suspended the membership of MNAs on reserved seats on May 13, 2024. The court later restored all affected members on July 2, 2025. Among those reinstated are 16 women lawmakers and three members from minority communities.
