NEW YORK: United Nation’s World Food Program (WFP) warned on Thursday that almost the entire population of the Gaza Strip is at risk of falling into severe hunger unless fuel deliveries are allowed and there’s a rapid increase in food provisions.
The UN reported that around 2.2 million Palestinians are on the edge of hunger hell and required food assistance for survival.
The WFP emphasized the urgent need for action, citing the immediate threat of starvation during the winter season. Abeer Etefa, the WFP’s senior official for the Middle East and North Africa, highlighted the disastrous impact of disrupted food supply chains, describing the current situation in Gaza as terrible. People in the region are struggling to secure essential food items, leading to a rise in malnutrition and dehydration cases.
Despite some aid trucks reaching Gaza, challenges persist due to damaged roads and a shortage of fuel caused by the Israeli blockade. Etefa stressed the collapse of food systems, with halted production, collapsed markets, and restricted access for fishermen. Urging a truce for the sake of humanity, she emphasized the critical need for immediate action.
