Abbas Araghchi Press Conference: Iran Says Pakistan-Mediated Talks With US Still Ongoing

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with the United States under Pakistan’s mediation have not failed, although the process has entered a difficult stage. Speaking during the Abbas Araghchi press conference in New Delhi, he said mistrust between Tehran and Washington remains the biggest hurdle in the negotiations.

He said Iran did not start the war and only acted in self-defense. According to him, Tehran is trying to maintain the ceasefire and avoid further escalation in the region.

During the Abbas Araghchi press conference, the Iranian foreign minister also addressed concerns about the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran is not responsible for disruptions in the vital shipping route. He added that restrictions only apply to countries involved in conflict against Iran.

Araghchi revealed that several Indian ships were guided safely through the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that naval mines are present in some areas and advised commercial vessels to stay in contact with the Iranian navy for safe passage. He described the overall situation around Hormuz as highly complicated but said Iran is trying to help ensure maritime safety.

Talking about negotiations with Washington, Araghchi said Iran would only continue talks if the other side shows seriousness. He stated that Iran has no trust in the United States because of mixed signals coming from American officials. However, he expressed hope that diplomacy and wisdom would eventually succeed.

The Abbas Araghchi press conference also focused on Iran’s nuclear program. He said Iran has never wanted nuclear weapons and already proved this under the 2015 nuclear agreement. He stressed that Tehran’s nuclear activities are purely peaceful and will remain so.

Speaking about ties with Russia, Araghchi said Iran shares strong strategic relations with Moscow. He confirmed that he recently held positive discussions with the Russian foreign minister. He also thanked Russia for its proposal regarding uranium enrichment transfer but clarified that Iran is not currently considering the move. He admitted that talks with the US on uranium enrichment remain deadlocked.

The Iranian foreign minister also claimed that Israel and the United States failed to protect the United Arab Emirates in the past. He said only American military bases in the UAE were targeted.

Referring again to Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, Araghchi appreciated every country trying to help reduce tensions and support dialogue. He said Iran always welcomes diplomacy, but contradictory American messages continue to create doubts about Washington’s real intentions.
