Afghan Taliban Safe Haven: Fueling Global Terror

Since the Afghan Taliban took power in August 2021, Afghanistan has become a Taliban safe haven for many terrorist groups. This means terrorists can live, train, and plan attacks with little fear of being stopped. The Taliban promised the world they would not let Afghanistan be used for attacks on other countries. But facts show they have broken this promise. This makes the Taliban a real threat to peace around the world.
In the past, before 2001, the Taliban gave protection to al-Qaeda. This led to the 9/11 attacks on the United States. Now, history seems to repeat. UN reports from 2025 say al-Qaeda still has a strong link with the Taliban. They have safe houses and training camps across Afghanistan. The group’s strength has not gone down under Taliban rule. In 2022, the U.S. killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul. He was living in a house connected to a top Taliban official. This shows how close the two groups are.The Taliban safe haven helps other dangerous groups too.
The Islamic State Khorasan Province, or ISIS-K, is a big threat. It carries out attacks in Afghanistan and outside. ISIS-K has done major attacks in Russia and Iran. The Taliban fights ISIS-K because they are rivals. But they have not stopped the group fully. UN experts say ISIS-K remains the most serious danger from Afghanistan to the region and the world. The biggest problem is with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. This group wants to attack Pakistan’s government. Since the Afghan Taliban came back, the TTP has grown much stronger. They use Afghanistan as a base to plan and launch attacks.
In 2024, the TTP killed hundreds in Pakistan. The Global Terrorism Index 2025 says TTP is the fastest-growing terrorist group. Deaths from TTP attacks rose 90% in one year. Pakistan blames the Afghan Taliban for giving safe havens and support to TTP fighters. Pakistan has lost over 1,000 lives in recent years to attacks from across the border. There have been clashes between Pakistani forces and militants. Pakistan has carried out air strikes inside Afghanistan. Talks between Pakistan and the Taliban have failed many times. In late 2025, Pakistan warned of possible open war if the problem continues. This shows how the Taliban safe haven creates real conflict between countries.
UN reports in 2025 warn that more than 20 terrorist groups operate from Afghanistan. They enjoy a permissive environment under the Taliban. The Taliban says they fight terrorism, but they do not act against their old allies like al-Qaeda and TTP. This breaks their promises from the 2020 Doha agreement. Experts from the U.S. and other countries say terrorist groups have more freedom now than in recent years. The danger goes beyond the region.
Groups in the Taliban safe haven can inspire or plan attacks far away. Al-Qaeda calls for attacks on the U.S. and its friends. ISIS-K has shown it can strike in Europe and elsewhere. If nothing changes, the risk of big international attacks grows. Some people say the Taliban only cares about ruling Afghanistan and does not want trouble abroad. They point out fewer big attacks inside Afghanistan. But this ignores the facts.
The Taliban protects groups that attack other countries. This makes them part of the problem. The Taliban safe haven also hurts ordinary people. The Taliban bans women from school and work. This causes poverty and anger. Many Afghans need aid to survive. When the country is unstable, it helps terrorists grow.
The Afghan Taliban has turned their country into a Taliban safe haven for terrorists. This endangers neighbors like Pakistan and Central Asia. It threatens the whole world with possible attacks. Reports from the UN, Global Terrorism Index, and others prove this. The world must see the Afghan Taliban as a threat to peace. They must push for real change so Afghanistan stops being a base for terror.
