ISLAMABAD: According to the 2023 census Balochistan Leads Population Growth; KP Records Lowest Increase, Balochistan saw the highest population growth rate at 3.2%, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) recorded the lowest at 2.38%. The country’s overall population growth rate was 2.55%, as reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
Since 1951, Pakistan’s population has expanded over seven times, from 33.7 million to 241.5 million in 2023. Punjab remains the most populous province with 52.9% of the population, though its share has been declining since 1951. Balochistan, while having the smallest population share, has seen a steady increase, now at 6.2%.
The population density has also risen significantly, from 42.4 persons per square kilometer in 1951 to 303.4 in 2023. Karachi Division is the most densely populated, with 5,779 persons per square kilometer, followed by Islamabad at 2,609. In contrast, Balochistan has the lowest population density, with areas like Rakhshan, Kalat, and Zhob ranging from 11 to 38 persons per square kilometer. Urban centers like Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad in Punjab have high population densities, while interior Sindh districts such as Tharparkar and Sujawal have lower densities. Islamabad stands out with a density of 2,609 persons per square kilometer, reflecting its rapid population growth.
