Attaullah Tarar Meets Broadcasters, Hears Media Concerns

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar met with owners and representatives of satellite TV channels, giving the sector a chance to put its concerns directly before the government. A large number of channel owners and representatives took part in the session, which was described as cordial.

The discussion centred on the problems facing the media industry and possible ways to resolve them. Several issues were taken up during the talks.

Khyber Network was represented at the meeting by its Executive Director, Kaiwan Hamid Raja.

Minister’s Assurance to Broadcasters

After hearing the concerns raised by the participants, the information minister assured them that the government would not move ahead with any legislation affecting broadcasters until all stakeholders had been consulted. He added that transparency would be ensured and that a level playing field would be maintained for everyone in the industry.

Tarar repeated the commitment after listening to the points put forward by the attendees, stating once more that no decision would be taken without consultation.

Level Playing Field for Satellite TV Channels

Following a detailed discussion of the challenges confronting the media sector, the minister said every player would be given equal opportunities. The assurance is aimed at easing worries among satellite TV channels about how future policy could affect them.

The meeting closed on a positive note, with broadcasters getting the chance to voice their reservations and the minister promising an open, consultative approach to media legislation in Pakistan.
