Multan: Federal Minister of Energy, Awais Leghari, declared on Monday that electricity theft is intolerable and announced the government’s plan to implement prepaid meters for electricity billing.
During a media briefing in Multan, Leghari emphasized the urgent need for a prepaid system similar to mobile phone billing to address the issue of electricity theft. He assured that all pending issues in the power sector would be tackled, highlighting the current system’s numerous flaws.
Leghari also mentioned ongoing negotiations between the government and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), aiming to provide relief worth Rs 45 billion, as announced by PML-N president Nawaz Sharif. He hinted at a significant drop in electricity prices expected next year.
Additionally, Leghari noted that the depreciation of the rupee had doubled capacity payments and announced his plans to visit power companies in Balochistan and Sindh next week to further address power sector challenges.
