ISLAMABAD: Lawyer groups from Balochistan, including the Balochistan Bar Council and Balochistan High Court (BHC) Bar Association, have jointly filed petitions in the Supreme Court challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
Six notable lawyers, including former Supreme Court Bar Association President Abid Zuberi, have also submitted a petition opposing the amendment, citing concerns over its impact on fundamental rights, as reported by a private news channel.
The amendment introduces modifications to the judiciary’s structure and the judicial appointment process. In their petitions, the law secretary and chief secretaries of all provinces are named as respondents.
The petitions urge the Supreme Court to deem the amendment “unconstitutional,” arguing it undermines judicial independence.
They also call for a halt to the newly formed Judicial Commission’s activities, requesting that any decisions already made under the amendment be declared “null and void.”
Additionally, the petitions raise questions about the constitutional legitimacy of the amendment’s passage due to an incomplete parliament.
