Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Confirms Shehbaz Sharif’s Request for PPP Support on 27th Constitutional Amendment, revealing that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally approached the PPP leadership to seek backing for the government’s proposed changes.
In a statement shared on X, Bilawal said that a high-level delegation led by the prime minister met him and President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the details of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The proposal reportedly includes major reforms such as the creation of a constitutional court, the revival of executive magistrates, and provisions related to the transfer of judges. It also proposes removing the current protection of provincial shares under the National Finance Commission (NFC) and revising Article 243, which outlines the command structure of Pakistan’s armed forces.
Bilawal stated that the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) will convene on November 6 after President Zardari’s return from Doha to finalize the party’s stance on the issue. The government, which had passed the 26th Constitutional Amendment last year, is now working on this new amendment to reform local governments and address legislative gaps from previous reforms.
The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has already criticized the move, accusing the ruling coalition of attempting to weaken judicial independence and strengthen executive control. As political debate intensifies, the PPP’s upcoming decision could prove crucial in shaping the outcome of the proposed constitutional reform. The 27th Constitutional Amendment has therefore become a defining political moment that could reshape Pakistan’s governance framework depending on the stance the PPP adopts.
