General Janie Carrière, 56, has become Canada’s first woman Army Chief, assuming the position of Chief of Defense Staff in a formal ceremony on Thursday.
General Carrière began her military career as an engineer and has served for over three and a half decades. Her extensive career includes deployments in Syria, Iraq, Bosnia, and Afghanistan.
She succeeds General Wayne Eyre and is the second woman in the world to hold the position of Army Chief. The first was former Major General Alenka Ermenc of Slovenia, who took up the role in 2018.
