ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced the decision to repatriate all Afghan refugees residing illegally in Pakistan.
In a media statement, he outlined the requirement for Afghan nationals returning to obtain the appropriate visa, similar to other individuals entering Pakistan for business purposes. The objective, as stated by Bugti, is to establish a normal state, with the prime minister emphasizing the dignified repatriation of illegal refugees.
Bugti stressed the importance of a systematic mechanism for this process, cautioning against mishandling and assuring that necessary actions would follow any such occurrences.
Emphasizing the deliberate nature of this decision, he revealed that 300,000 illegal Afghan residents had voluntarily left the country in response to the government’s call for voluntary returns.
Highlighting the government’s facilitation of the return of 8,000 individuals, Bugti addressed the 569 complaints received, with 80% already resolved through a dedicated government-level mechanism.
He underscored the protection of individuals with valid identity cards, emphasizing that those migrants should not face harassment.
Bugti dispelled misconceptions, stating that the impression of action against Afghan immigrants is incorrect.
He reiterated that the dignified repatriation of illegal foreign residents is ongoing, with the government providing necessary facilities for those returning.
The minister also noted that suggestions regarding the return of foreigners are being seriously considered in the ongoing efforts.
