Field Marshal Asim Munir, who serves as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has given a visiting American delegation Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics behind the Afghanistan conflict. The military’s media wing said on Monday that he also spoke about the difficulties Pakistan faced during the long war next door.
Asim Munir Meets US Afghanistan War Commission at GHQ
According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting took place at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The visitors were members of the US Afghanistan War Commission, led by co-chairs Shamila N Chaudhary and Dr Colin F Jackson.
The delegation is currently reviewing the 20-year engagement of the United States in Afghanistan.
Regional View Should Inform the Assessment
CDF Munir stressed that the regional perspective, along with Islamabad’s own experience, should be part of any assessment of the conflict’s strategic, diplomatic and operational sides.
The ISPR said the discussions covered matters of mutual interest, including Pakistan’s support, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan. The focus, it added, was on perspectives relevant to the commission’s work.
The visiting team also acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and the sacrifices it made during the Afghan conflict. Members appreciated its continued contribution to peace and stability in the region.
Rising Cross-Border Attacks Since 2021
Pakistan has recorded a sharp increase in cross-border terrorist incidents since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have been the worst affected.
Islamabad has repeatedly asked Kabul to stop militant groups from using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan. Pakistan maintains that the Afghan Taliban authorities have not taken effective action against the groups behind attacks on its security forces and civilians.
