ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Qazi Faez Isa on Tuesday summoned Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) meeting.
The SJC, the sole constitutional body empowered to scrutinize the conduct of judges in superior courts and recommend their removal under Article 209 of the Constitution, is set to convene on December 14 at the Supreme Court building. CJP Justice Qazi Faez Isa will preside over the meeting to address various crucial issues.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) took notice on Monday of the disparity between the judicial decision on lifetime disqualification under Article 62 (1) (f) and the amendments introduced to the Elections Act, 2017.
The top court has scheduled a hearing for January 2024 and referred the matter, which involves determining the period for disqualification, to the judges’ committee for the formation of a bench.
Notices have been issued to Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan, advocate generals of all provinces, and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to provide assistance to the Supreme Court (SC) in this matter.
The apex court’s attention was drawn to this issue through a petition filed by Shamona Badshah Qaisrani, a former Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who was disqualified in 2007 due to a fake degree.
