China Mediates Pakistan-Afghanistan Tensions as Islamabad Hosts Key Diplomatic Talks

China mediates Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions

ISLAMABAD: China has stepped up its diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan and promote lasting peace in the region.

As part of these efforts, China’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong, visited Islamabad and held detailed talks with Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq.

The meeting focused on reducing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, addressing cross-border terrorism, and preparing for the second phase of the Urumqi Process, a China-hosted diplomatic initiative aimed at improving cooperation among regional stakeholders.

Both officials described the first round of trilateral consultations held in Urumqi in April as constructive and productive. Yue Xiaoyong, who recently visited Kabul and met officials of Afghanistan’s interim government, briefed his Pakistani counterpart on preparations for the next round of talks.

The two diplomats agreed that the Urumqi Process has emerged as an effective platform for resolving disputes and rebuilding trust between Pakistan and Afghanistan following a period of strained bilateral engagement.

In a statement shared on social media after the meeting, Mohammad Sadiq said both sides held frank discussions on regional security challenges. They expressed concern over the activities of militant groups operating from Afghan territory, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.

The officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening counterterrorism cooperation and improving coordination to support regional peace and stability. They also stressed the importance of protecting major development projects, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Tensions and clashes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in recent months have disrupted trade and cross-border movement. However, Beijing’s diplomatic engagement has encouraged both countries to pursue dialogue instead of confrontation.

The Chinese envoy emphasized that border closures negatively affect local communities and economic activity. He urged both sides to maintain political and diplomatic engagement while strengthening security mechanisms along the border.

The two representatives expressed hope that the next phase of the Urumqi Process would help achieve a breakthrough in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations and contribute to long-term regional stability.
