China, Pakistan Vow to Upgrade CPEC with New Strategic Vision

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is on an official trip to Pakistan, met Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir in Islamabad on Friday, according to the military’s media wing.

The statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations said discussions centered on regional security, counter-terrorism, and matters of mutual interest. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the all-weather strategic partnership and agreed to boost cooperation at regional and global forums.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured Beijing’s strong support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and development. In response, the army chief expressed gratitude for China’s consistent backing over the years. The meeting ended with a shared pledge to work together for peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.

The Chinese foreign minister’s meeting with the army chief came a day after he held talks with Pakistan’s top leadership, including the prime minister, president, and deputy prime minister.

Earlier, FM Wang Yi co-chaired the 6th round of strategic dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. During the session, both countries renewed their commitment to the high-quality development of the upgraded China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The two sides also reviewed the entire range of bilateral relations and discussed important regional and international matters.

They exchanged detailed views on CPEC 2.0, economic and trade relations, people-to-people exchanges, and multilateral cooperation. Addressing a joint press briefing with FM Wang Yi, Senator Dar highlighted the complete consensus between the two countries on all key bilateral, regional, and global issues. He said Pakistan values China’s vision for enhancing cooperation and upgrading CPEC to its next stage.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as the backbone of the strategic partnership. He underlined that the current focus is to promote high-quality development under the initiative. Both sides agreed to transform CPEC into “a growth corridor, a livelihood corridor, a green corridor, and an open corridor.”

Wang Yi stressed that China would expand cooperation in industries, agriculture, and mining to strengthen Pakistan’s self-reliance and economic resilience. He said China would also continue to support the development and operations of Gwadar Port and push forward the Karakoram Highway (KKH) realignment project. In addition, the Chinese foreign minister welcomed third-party participation in the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project, a major component of CPEC.
