ISLAMABAD: In a significant political development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur recently held a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking the first encounter between leaders of rival parties
Following the meeting, Ali Amin Gandapur described the interaction as “positive” during a press briefing alongside Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and other PML-N officials.
Chief Minister Gandapur, representing PTI, underscored the importance of engaging in political dialogue with his party’s incarcerated founder, Imran Khan, who has been detained since August last year on various charges. He emphasized that such discussions could lead to the resolution of political issues.
Gandapur stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz had assured him of permission to meet Imran Khan in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, despite heightened security measures and meeting restrictions due to security concerns. The proposed meeting aims to discuss the upcoming Senate elections.
The KP CM stressed the need to address public grievances and secure the province’s rightful dues, with the Prime Minister pledging cooperation in this regard. The meeting between leaders from opposing parties is seen as a significant step toward easing political tensions, especially following the ousting of the PTI-led government through a no-confidence motion in April 2022.
Gandapur reaffirmed PTI’s position that the current government “stole” the public mandate while maintaining a commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the federal government.
Responding to questions about Prime Minister Shehbaz’s recent visit to KP, Gandapur expressed regret for not being able to personally receive him due to a prior engagement.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal assured that the federal government would take all necessary measures for development and ensure law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He highlighted the Prime Minister’s directives to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during Ramadan and emphasized that the state belongs to all citizens, transcending political differences.
Iqbal also mentioned that Shehbaz assured Gandapur of fair treatment for all individuals, reflecting a commitment to justice and inclusivity.
