Lahore: The business community has lauded COAS Asim Munir for his decisive role in addressing long-standing tax concerns faced by traders and industrialists. His timely action, they said, has brought much-needed relief to Pakistan’s private sector.
Speaking at a press conference at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Office, FPCCI Vice President and Regional Chairman Zain Iftikhar Chaudhry, Patron-in-Chief of the United Business Group (UBG) S M Tanveer, and Lahore Chamber of Commerce President Mian Abu Zar Shad expressed deep appreciation for COAS Asim Munir. They praised his vision of turning Pakistan into an “Asian Tiger” and vowed to stand united with him in this mission.
Business leaders acknowledged that his commitment has created a new sense of optimism. They particularly welcomed his support in the amendment of Section 37A. The original provision had allowed Grade-16 officers to arrest businessmen — a move they called unacceptable and damaging to investor confidence.
“Intimidation will only drive away investment,” they stressed. “We are committed to paying our fair share in taxes. But we will not compromise on the rights of the business community.” They congratulated business owners across Pakistan for this legislative victory, describing it as a step toward restoring trust and rebuilding the economy.
The FPCCI leadership also highlighted its 18-month struggle to resolve the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) issue. They noted, however, that despite continuous efforts, the benefits have yet to reach businesses or the public.
Calling for urgent reforms, they urged the government to lower electricity tariffs to 9 cents and reduce interest rates to single digits. This, they said, would help Pakistan compete in global markets. They warned that without such measures, export orders might shift to other countries.
The leaders further pointed out that Pakistan has a unique opportunity to boost exports due to the 50% tariff on Indian goods. They pressed for policies that would make Pakistani products more competitive worldwide.
Lastly, they criticised SNGPL for imposing backdated charges on gas bills for the past five years. They called the move unjust and demanded an immediate reversal.
Through all these challenges, the business community reaffirmed its faith in COAS Asim Munir’s leadership. They believe his unwavering support will continue to guide Pakistan toward economic stability and growth.
