Quetta: A powerful Harnai blast in the Shahrag area of Balochistan killed at least 11 labourers and left six others injured on Friday. Deputy Commissioner Hazrat Wali Kakar confirmed the casualties.
Initially, nine workers lost their lives when an explosion struck near a vehicle carrying coal miners. Later, two more injured miners succumbed to their wounds. The deadly explosion caused widespread devastation in the area.
Security officials believe the blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted on the roadside. Local levies and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area after the attack. The injured and deceased were quickly moved to medical facilities. Some of the injured remain in critical condition. Authorities are making arrangements to transfer them to Quetta for advanced treatment.
The Shahrag region, known for its coal mines, has witnessed multiple bomb blasts in recent months. However, officials report that the loss of lives in this incident is higher than in previous attacks.
According to the mines department, most of the affected labourers were from Swat and Shangla. The tragedy has left families devastated as they await further updates on the injured.
A spokesperson for the Balochistan government expressed deep sorrow over the attack. He confirmed that an investigation into the Harnai blast has been ordered to determine the perpetrators behind the deadly act.
Authorities remain on high alert as they continue efforts to ensure the safety of workers in the region.
