Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud sustained injuries in a new firing incident in the Bagan area on Saturday. Violence flared up in the troubled region despite a recent peace agreement between rival tribes. The deputy commissioner, who was leading efforts to establish peace, was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred just as authorities prepared to send an aid convoy to Parachinar. The convoy followed the peace accord signed on January 1. This agreement ended hostilities and required the surrender of arms to the state. The Tal-Parachinar road, which had been closed for three months, reopened today, enabling the first convoy of essential supplies to reach the affected area.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry emphasized the role of peace committees in protecting the convoy and enforcing the agreement. He stated these committees, which include local residents, tribal elders, and leaders from all sects, are working to maintain harmony.
According to government sources, local residents pledged to hand over their weapons to authorities within 15 days. This will be done as part of a phased plan. Additionally, dismantling of local bunkers is expected to be completed within a month.
The recent developments mark a critical step in restoring normalcy to the crisis-hit region. However, incidents like the attack on the deputy commissioner highlight the challenges that remain in implementing the peace agreement.
