ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan has summoned the interior secretary for his failure to produce PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the defamation case against the ECP. The commission, led by Nisar Durrani, heard the case involving PTI chief Imran Khan, Asad Umar, and Fawad Chaudhry, adjourning the proceedings until November 13.
While Fawad Chaudhry and Asad Umar appeared before the commission, Imran Khan was not brought from Adiala Jail. PTI lawyer Shoaib Shaheen expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the real insult to the election commission occurred on that day.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) submitted a report on Imran Khan’s appearance, citing security threats in the densely populated Rawalpindi area. ECP’s member from Sindh, Nisar Durrani, questioned the AIG’s belief in Imran Khan’s statements about threats to his life.
The Interior Ministry suggested conducting the hearing in Adiala Jail, prompting the commission to request a written apology from Imran Khan.
Criticizing the ministry’s inability to provide security and questioning its authority, the commission insisted that the interior secretary should appear in person.
The contempt of the election commission case hearing was postponed until November 13.
