ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has requested records pertaining to the election of the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday.
In a session led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, a five-member bench addressed the case concerning the removal of former PTI Chairman, Imran Khan, from his party post.
Imran Khan’s lawyer, Shoaib Shaheen, argued, “We have submitted the record of intra-party elections to the Election Commission; now this case should be concluded. Legally, this case is closed as the party’s new chairman has been elected.”
Shaheen mentioned that if the case is to proceed, Akbar S. Babar is filing a petition, and the Commission should consider it. In response, Chief Election Commissioner stated, “You are giving Khalid Mahmood a chance to file a petition against the new chairman as well.”
Petitioner Khalid Mahmood urged, “You should specify in the order that the former chairman of PTI is convicted and cannot hold any position in the party.”
The Chief Election Commissioner noted that since the ex-chairman PTI did not contest the election, they cannot comment on it. The ECP has requested records regarding the election of the PTI Chairman and has reserved the decision on the disqualification of the former Chairman, which will be announced based on the provided record.
