Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja has justified the suspension of internet services as a security measure during the general elections, citing concerns over potential terror incidents. Raja emphasized the need for maintaining a secure environment for the electoral process, particularly in light of recent terrorist activities in Balochistan.
Regarding the nationwide suspension of mobile services during voting, Raja reiterated its necessity for ensuring the safety and integrity of the election process. However, he stressed the importance of comprehensive security assessments and cooperation between relevant agencies to effectively address security challenges.
While acknowledging the role of the Ministry of Interior and other security agencies in assessing and managing security risks, Raja clarified that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would not intervene in decisions regarding internet services. He indicated that such matters would be handled separately, with a focus on balancing security imperatives with citizens’ rights.
The temporary suspension of mobile phone services during the upcoming general elections reflects a proactive approach by electoral authorities to safeguard the electoral process against potential disruptions. However, concerns remain among the public regarding the impact of these measures on communication and accessibility.
Meanwhile Bilawal Bhutto directed his party to challenge the mobile and internet suspension in the court.
