PESHAWAR: Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Haji Ghulam Ali emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between the federal and provincial governments, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and state institutions to ensure a peaceful environment for upcoming elections. He emphasized that conducting elections amidst loss of life is not feasible. How can they advocate for elections when people are being targeting in terror attacks?
Speaking to private TV Channel Programe, he clarified that his recent statements shouldn’t be misconstrued as opposition to holding elections.
Ghulam Ali said that elections are the key to addressing the country’s political and social issues. However, he highlighted the importance of actions based on credible reports by governments, institutions, and the ECP to facilitate the electoral process. The governor insisted on the responsibility of all stakeholders to contribute to creating a peaceful atmosphere essential for successful elections.
Expressing concerns about the stability of areas like Waziristan, DI Khan, and Lakki Marwat, Ghulam Ali urged attention from the ECP and federal government to address the situation. He emphasized the need to initiate measures immediately to counter potential problems, stating that a normal election process cannot proceed when people are losing their lives.
While avoiding direct confirmation of specific threats to political parties or politicians, Ghulam Ali referenced recent incidents like the bombing in Bajaur as indicators of the province’s security challenges. When asked about recommending elections if the law and order situation doesn’t improve by February, he indicated that he would provide input at the appropriate time.
Regarding reports of higher threats to Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, the governor suggested that the Minister of Interior should address the issue. On the topic of reconciliation with terrorists, Ghulam Ali refrained from giving his personal opinion, noting the criticism of the policy by state institutions. He emphasized the need for consensus and careful consideration in any potential agreement with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
