ISLAMABAD: The average base electricity tariff has been increased by Rs1.79 per unit with effect from January 1, according to a decision issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).
Nepra announced that it has approved the request submitted by power distribution companies (DISCOs) and forwarded the decision to the federal government. The revised tariff will come into force after formal approval by the government.
As per Nepra’s notification, the average base electricity tariff has been fixed at Rs33.38 per unit, compared to the existing rate of Rs31.59 per unit. The newly determined tariff reflects an increase of Rs1.79 per unit over the current base rate.
For the ongoing fiscal year, the total financial requirement of DISCOs has been estimated at Rs3,379 billion. This includes Rs2,923 billion allocated for power purchase costs and Rs456.15 billion for distribution companies’ operational expenses, including profit margins.
Nepra further stated that annual electricity sales for the current year are projected at 101 billion units. The decision has been sent to the federal government to facilitate the filing of a uniform tariff request.
Meanwhile, Nepra has also announced a reduction of Rs0.93 per unit in electricity prices under the fuel price adjustment mechanism for November.
According to the notification, electricity consumers across the country, including Karachi, will receive relief in their January bills. However, lifeline consumers will not be eligible for this adjustment.
