Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink, has announced the provision of free internet services in Venezuela for a limited period, following growing political turmoil and reports of internet shutdowns across the country.
According to international media reports, Elon Musk announced the move as a gesture of support for the Venezuelan people, who have faced prolonged online restrictions and censorship. Starlink confirmed that free broadband services will remain available in Venezuela until February 3.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Starlink said it is committed to maintaining “continuous connectivity” with Venezuela, describing the country as one that has long suffered from online censorship and restricted digital access.
The company highlighted that the Maduro government had previously blocked major social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, during periods of unrest.
Media reports further revealed that internet services were largely suspended following military operations, leaving most areas of the Venezuelan capital without connectivity.
Meanwhile, political tensions escalated after US President Donald Trump, during a press conference in Florida, announced criminal charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Trump claimed that orders had been issued for Maduro and his wife to be arrested and transferred to New York.
Trump also stated that the US military carried out an extraordinary operation in Venezuela’s capital, showcasing air, land, and naval power. He described the operation as a “remarkable demonstration of American military strength.”
In another statement, Trump claimed that the United States would oversee Venezuela until a transfer of power takes place, adding that American oil companies would operate in the country during this period.
The situation continues to draw global attention as Venezuela faces a complex mix of political uncertainty, military developments, and digital blackouts.
