ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Energy Minister Muhammad Ali, In a press conference, said that government can’t provide affordable gas while dealing with the procurement of expensive gas.
He addressed concerns about rising gas prices, assuring the public that the hike wouldn’t contribute to the growing circular debt. He emphasized the challenge of providing affordable gas while dealing with the procurement of expensive gas.
The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce losses in the petroleum and gas sector, mentioning a significant increase in the sector’s revolving debt and corresponding measures being taken in the power sector to address losses.
Ali pointed out a 7-8% annual decline in local gas production and the exit of foreign companies from the sector. Additionally, he disclosed a 16 billion-dollar import in the oil and gas sector.
In terms of the current gas tariff structure, Minister Muhammad Ali reassured the public that it takes into consideration the welfare of low-income consumers.
