ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has greenlit the establishment of a commission of inquiry to address the concerns raised in a letter penned by six judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has been appointed to chair the inquiry commission, as per insider sources. The commission, sanctioned by the federal cabinet, will delve into the allegations brought forth by the judges of the Islamabad High Court.
This decision comes in the wake of a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, where the formation of the inquiry commission was mutually agreed upon.
Letter from IHC Judges
On Tuesday, April 26, six judges from the IHC penned a letter addressed to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), advocating for full support for Justice Retired Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui’s call for an investigation. They emphasized the need to hold all parties accountable in cases where judicial independence is compromised, stressing the absence of clear guidance in the Code of Conduct for Judges on reporting such matters.
Full Court Session and PM-CJP Meeting
The Chief Justice of Pakistan convened two full court sessions to address the concerns raised by the judges of the Islamabad High Court. Following the initial session, a meeting between the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice ensued. Subsequently, another full court session was held, culminating in a declaration asserting zero tolerance for executive interference in judicial affairs.
