RAWALPINDI: Retired Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, former chief of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, has been officially charged with offenses related to national security. The military’s media arm, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed the development on Tuesday.
The Field General Court Martial (FGCM) proceedings against Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed began on August 12, 2024. The trial is being conducted under the Pakistan Army Act. The ISPR stated that he faces charges for engaging in political activities and violating the Official Secrets Act. These violations allegedly caused harm to national security and the country’s broader interests.
Additional accusations include misuse of his position and government resources, along with causing unjust harm to individuals. The retired general’s actions have raised serious concerns about breaches of trust and authority.
The ISPR also disclosed that a separate investigation is ongoing. This inquiry examines his alleged involvement in violent incidents that caused unrest across the country. Specifically, his links to the events of May 9 are under scrutiny. The probe highlights the role of political figures accused of working alongside him to incite chaos and instability.
The military emphasized that Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hameed is being given all legal rights during the court martial. The proceedings are in line with the law, ensuring a fair trial.
