PORT ARTHUR: A powerful explosion at a major oil refinery in the US state of Texas triggered a large fire, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting an emergency alert in nearby areas.
The incident occurred at a refinery operated by Valero in the coastal city of Port Arthur. Soon after the blast, authorities urged residents in surrounding neighborhoods to stay indoors as a safety precaution.
According to Mayor Charlotte M. Moses, no casualties have been reported so far. She advised residents, especially those living in the western part of the city, to remain inside their homes while emergency teams handle the situation.
Firefighters rushed to the site and are actively working to bring the fire under control. Officials say the situation is being closely monitored.
“The explosion did occur, but the situation is under control and everyone is safe,” the mayor said. She added that efforts are underway to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion. Further investigations are expected once the fire is fully contained.
