SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A deadly explosion near a mosque in South Waziristan’s Azam Warsak bazaar killed two persons and injured five others on Sunday. According to police, the blast was caused by a remote-controlled bomb.
The police confirmed that the deceased person was Mufti Ejazul Haq. The wounded individuals, identified as Saddam, Shah Hussain, Noor Hussain, Zain Ullah, and Maulana Shahzada Wazir, were rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Wana. Maulana Shahzada sustained serious injuries, and some of the other victims are in critical condition, said Dr. Fazlur Rehman, Deputy Medical Superintendent at the hospital.
Authorities at the hospital declared an emergency in response to the blast. Two of the critically injured were transferred to Dera Ismail Khan for further treatment.
Station House Officer (SHO) Usman Wazir from the Azam Warsak Police Station confirmed that a remote-controlled bomb was planted near the mosque by unknown individuals. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
This attack is part of a worrying trend of rising terrorism in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan. The violence has escalated since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.
A recent report by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) highlighted a sharp rise in terrorist activities in the third quarter of 2024. There was a 90% increase in violence during this period, which saw 722 fatalities and 615 injuries from 328 incidents of terrorism and counter-terrorism operations. The majority of these deaths occurred in KP and Balochistan, marking the highest level of violence in a decade.
