Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Monday categorically dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting an extension in the deadline for filing income tax returns. The tax authority declared such claims “baseless and misleading,” urging taxpayers to meet the existing deadline of September 30, 2025.
FBR Denies Flood-Linked Extension Claims
According to the FBR, some elements even attempted to link the alleged extension with the recent floods. The Board rejected this argument, stating that the majority of taxpayers reside in areas unaffected by floods and have already been given ample time to fulfill their legal obligation.
No Deadline Relaxation, Penalties to Apply
The FBR stressed that the deadline will not be extended under any circumstances. Taxpayers failing to file their income tax returns by September 30 will face statutory penalties as prescribed under tax laws.
The Board reminded citizens that filing tax returns is both a legal responsibility and a national duty, urging prompt compliance to avoid legal consequences.
IRIS System Fully Operational
The FBR also rejected claims of technical issues with its online portal, IRIS, clarifying that the system remains fully functional and accessible. It highlighted that a simplified return form has been introduced this year to make the process easier for taxpayers.
Conditional 15-Day Relief Available
While no blanket extension has been granted, the FBR explained that taxpayers facing genuine difficulties may request a 15-day extension. However, this relief will only be granted with approval from the relevant committee, and taxpayers must ensure that their due tax is deposited by September 30.
Earlier Sales Tax Extension for July Returns
Separately, the FBR had earlier extended the filing deadline for monthly sales tax and federal excise returns for the tax period of July 2025. In a notification, it announced that the filing deadline was moved from August 18 to August 26, 2025, though taxpayers were required to deposit their due liabilities within the original due date.
